Smoothing planes, as their name implies, are designed for smoothing and final finishing.

Made with a quality grey cast iron body for strength and stability with precision ground base and sides for flatness and squareness. Machined seatings eliminate movement and blade judder. A lever cap with a brass locking screw secures the blade assembly and enables easy release for sharpening. Wooden handles and guidance knobs maximise user comfort. A solid brass blade adjustment nut completes the appeal of these traditional tools.

I have several Stanley no4's from the 1950's that were gifted to me, so I have some serious competition to rate this against and the Faithfull number 4 beats them all hands down.

When I first got it, I just checked for squareness of the sole, that being good, I put the plane to work, and work like a Trojan it did. It was later that I noted the sleeve on the wooden box it came in, recommended sharpening first !!!

I was so impressed, I bought a number 5 as well and that too was a winner.

I bought both of these in the wooden boxed edition, I'm not sure if that costs more but it's been well worth it to me as I sometimes have to work in damp conditions (a cellar). When I finally had to sharpen the blade for the first time, I hate doing the first sharpening of a new blade, I finally checked the sole for flatness, this fortunately didn't take to long and once I had the blade sharpened and honed to my satisfaction (sharp enough to shave hair from my arm) it was good to go.

An excellent plane at a very competitive price. Highly recommended.

Fine grain steel, hard enough to take and keep 8000 grit edge, soft enough to be quickly lapped. Expect to put in about an hour on lapping and tuning. But from that point on, it cuts perfectly and leaves a glass finish. Very competitive price Vs buying old or premium. Perfect weight, solid handles. I wont hesitate to buy faithfull tools in future.

This plane offers very good value for money. The presentation box is a nice touch. The blade adjustment is very easy to use and better than my Stanley. I honed the blade on a diamond stone before use and the plane cut very well indeed. It does feel a little cheap compared to my Stanley however the price of the Faithfull is so low I can tolerate it. Would recommend.
